5cm (50mm) across the case size 16.
Not to be confused with the lower quality "Smiths" pocket watches from the 60's and 70's
Rarely available, this is a fabulous solid 18ct full hunter pocket watch with some very prestigious names involved with its manufacture and sale. The most obvious being S Smith and Son, London. Mostly known for automobile instruments and the supply of timepieces to the British military, in particular, the supply of WWII aircraft clocks for instrument panels for fighters and bombers such as the Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster to mention but a few. Having worked on several Smith & Son aircraft clocks (6a/579) I recognise that this watch shares some characteristics with the Jaeger-LeCoultre movement found in those types. Although signed by Smith & Sons and bears the marks for Baume and Co (B&Co with 3 stars) I believe the Swiss manufacturer to be Jaeger-LeCoultre. Baume & Co imported swiss timepieces to the UK and are heavily linked to Longines. My research ends here, I suspect it has a lot more to be found.
About the watch.
Has been well looked after over the 108 years of its existence. Bearing in mind, the purer the gold, the softer it is and can easily succumb to marks and damage.
Housed in a fully hallmarked (on all parts)18ct gold plain full hunter case. Hallmarked Swiss 18c London Import 18 .75 date mark 1911 and bears the SS marks for S Smith and Son. The front and the rear covers open to 90 degrees, good hinges, no major dings, dents or scratches, has some very minor and insignificant marks and tiny dings here and there (as you would expect with a 100+ year old timepiece) no signs of wear anywhere including the bow. Front cover pops open with a depression of the crown (as it should). The dial is bright and clean, has a hairline crack at the bottom, under the sub seconds dial (from V to the sub seconds dial and VII to the sub seconds dial, short and not too noticeable). Roman numerals and signed "S Smith & Son 9 Strand Watchmaker To The Admiralty LONDON". Gold hands.
The 15-jewel movement is a full plate swiss lever (suspected to be of LeCoutre manufacture) and bears the name of S Smith & Son and the marks of Baume and Co (B&Co 3 stars). Recently fully serviced and tested, runs very well and keeps good time. Lever set and crown wind. lever is at the 4 (IIII) O'clock position.
Mineral glass crystal is in perfect condition.
Presented in a new, luxury, velvet, fitted pocket watch box in red.
Great for wedding, graduation, retirement, Christmas, Father’s day or birthday present. A very nice piece. Recently Fully Serviced, including modern alloy "unbreakable" mainspring.
Servicing is defined as the piece being disassembled, cleaned, inspected and adjusted if necessary. It is then re-assembled and correctly oiled, timed for accuracy and adjusted if required. The mainspring will be replaced with a modern alloy type and the piece will be bench-tested for at least one day.
I restore all of my watches to a fully working condition. It is my aim to provide a watch that is not only running but working to a usable state. My watches can be worn and used for their intended purpose on a daily basis. The time keeping should certainly be within +- 5 minutes per 24 hours but I aim for +-3 or better. I do offer guarantees, the details of which can be found on my website for Time Pocket Watches. I have many years experience and a vast catalogue of Waltham spares and parts.
My highly detailed photographs show the watch in detail, this level of detail is not normally seen by the naked eye. The watch will look even better in real life.
