6cm (60mm) wide across the case. This is a substantial cased Waltham model 845 size 18s railroad grade open faced pocket watch. Top quality throughout, let’s begin with the case. The coin silver case has a trade mark of a crescent moon and star, this is a registered trade mark of Waltham so off to a good start. It is marked with the trade mark and "PAT 9. 1885 COIN 4" and the serial number. Coin silver is an American value for silver purity and is 90% pure or 900 if you like. It is heavy (195 grams including the movement) and thick walled, believed to be a hermetic case (air tight) as the rear of the case is one piece only having the front crystal screw off and the movement swigs out on a hinge. The crystal is sealed and has a screw ring securing it from behind thurther creating an air tight seal; this was done to help prevent dust and moisture ingress. The front screws off to allow access to the lever for setting the time (at 2 O'clock position). Once the cover is off access to the swing out movement is possible. To swing the movement out the crown is pulled up/out fully (until it stops) to disengage the crown stem from the movement. You can then lift using the slotted access tab at the bottom of the movement below the 6 O'clock position. The movement swings out so you can inspect the workings. Closing is the reverse, making sure the crown and stem engage back with the movement. The movement is a very high quality grade 845 18s size 21 jewel model 1892 dates to c1904. In fine condition and runs exceptionally well and keeping very accurate time. Recently serviced and, as usual, fitted with a modern alloy "unbreakable" mainspring. It has the usual high grade features such as a gold micro adjuster star, screw in gold jewel hole holders and beautifully Damascened. It has a double sunk 3 piece dial (chapter ring, center dial and sub seconds dial are all separate pieces soldered at the rear) in great condition, no hairline cracks but does have an old chip repair at the 5 O'clock position. Blued steel hands, Arabic numbering and red outer chapter ring numbers. The crystal is mineral glass and in good condition, some very minor marks and a very minor knick towards outer edge. I would grade this as Extra Fine condition.
